Product Information

For what conditions or diseases is this medication prescribed?
Diazepam is used to relieve anxiety, muscle spasms and seizures, and to control the agitation caused by alcohol withdrawal.

This medication may also be prescribed for other uses; Ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

How should this medicine be used?
Diazepam is packaged in the form of tablets, capsules and a prolonged-release (long-acting) concentrated solution to take by mouth. Do not open, chew, or crush the extended-release capsules; take them whole. Usually this medicine is taken between one to four times a day with or without food. Carefully follow the instructions on the medication label and ask your doctor or pharmacist anything you do not understand. Use the medication exactly as directed.

The liquid concentrate of diazepam comes with a specially marked dropper to measure the dose. Ask your pharmacist to show you how to use it. Dilute the concentrate in water, juice or carbonated beverages just before drinking it. It can also be mixed with applesauce or pudding just before taking the dose.

Diazepam produces dependence. Do not take a larger dose, more often or for longer than indicated by your doctor. Long-term or excessive use of diazepam may develop tolerance, making this medication less effective. This medicine should be taken regularly to be effective. Do not skip doses even if you think you do not need them. Do not take diazepam for more than 4 months or discontinue its use without first talking to your doctor. Sudden suspension of the medication can worsen your condition and withdrawal symptoms (state of anxiety, insomnia and irritability). Your doctor will reduce the dose gradually.

What other uses does this medication have?
Diazepam is also used to treat irritable bowel syndrome and panic attacks. Talk to your doctor about the risks of using this medication to treat your condition.

What special precautions should I follow?
Before you start taking diazepam:
tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to diazepam, alprazolam (Xanax), chlordiazepoxide (Librium, in Librax), clonazepam (Klonopin), clorazepate (Gen-Xene, Tranxene), estazolam, flurazepam, lorazepam (Ativan), oxazepam, temazepam (Restoril), triazolam (Halcion), other medicines, or any of the ingredients of diazepam products. Ask your pharmacist for a list of the ingredients.
tell your doctor and pharmacist what prescription and non-prescription medications, vitamins, and nutritional supplements you are taking. Be sure to mention any of the following: antihistamines; cimetidine (Tagamet); digoxin (Lanoxin); disulfiram (Antabuse); fluoxetine (Prozac); isoniazid (Laniazid, in Rifamate, in Rifater); ketoconazole (Nizoral); levodopa (in Ritary, in Sinemet, in Stalevo); medications for depression, seizures, Parkinson's disease, asthma, colds or allergies; metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol XL); muscle relaxants; oral contraceptives; probenecid (Probalan, in Col-Probenecid); propranolol (Hemangeol, Inderal, Innopran); ranitidine (Zantac); rifampicin (Rifadin, Rimactane, in Rifamate, in Rifater); sedatives; sleeping pills; theophylline (Elixophyllin, Theo 24, Theochron); tranquilizers; or valproic acid (Depakene). Your doctor may need to change the doses of your medications or monitor you closely for side effects.
if you take antacids, take diazepam first and wait 1 hour before taking the antacid.
tell your doctor if you have or have ever had glaucoma; convulsive crisis; or problems with the lung, heart or liver.
tell your doctor if you are pregnant, have plans to get pregnant, or if you are breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while taking this medication, call your doctor immediately.
Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of taking this medicine if you are 65 years of age or older. Older adults do not usually take diazepam because it is not as safe and effective as other medications that can be used to treat the same condition.
if you are having surgery, including dental surgery, tell the doctor or dentist that you are taking diazepam.
This medication can make you drowsy (make you sleepy), so it is recommended that you do not drive cars or operate heavy machinery until you know how it will affect you.
tell your doctor if you use tobacco products, as smoking may reduce the effectiveness of this medication.
What do I have to do if I forget to take a dose?
If you take several doses a day and forgot to take one, skip that one and continue with the regular dosage scheduled for that day. Do not take a double dose to make up for the one you forgot.
